Papal bull “Exurgat Deus,” from Clement V to the Order of Saint John [Present-day Greece]: “Jews are to be compelled by the secular authorities to remit the interest they have already extorted [from Crusaders], and until they do so, they shall be denied any kind of intercourse with the Christian faithful, under penalty of excommunication [of the Christians], in the marketplace or otherwise.”
