“Ordinance” issued by the Austrian Government [Present-day Austria, Czech Republic; House of Habsburg-Lorraine]: “The nummerus localis* of the Jews shall not be surpassed.” [Researcher’s note: *Most localities had a pre-determined “number of spots” called “Familienstellen” which could be assigned to Jews. This number could not be surpassed, and if the sons of a Jew wanted to get married, they had to apply for their own ‘spot.’ This was done to limit the number of Jews in specific regions.]
