“Royal Court Decree” issued by the Austrian Royal Court [Present-day Austria]: “[…] The Jews in the State of Austria, are to be used in the military service – just like all the other subjects; however, not as armed [soldiers with rifles] (‘zum Feuergewehr’), but only as cartage-servants (‘Fuhrwesenknechte’) […]” [Researcher’s note: A decree was issued on March 9, 1789, which permitted Jews to serve in the military as soldiers who were “permitted to carry rifles” if they so choose.]
