Canons issued by the Synod of Montpellier [Present-day France]: “V. To restrain unbridled Jewish avarice, it is ordered that Jews may be permitted to take back from borrowers only the principal with no interest. No one is to aid Jews in the collection of debts, unless they go into court and swear the loans bear no interest.”
