Article Letter, issued by Christian V, King of Denmark and Norway [Present-day Denmark, Norway]: “Art. 168. Whenever [soldiers] are allowed [to have] sutlers and vivandiers in the camp or garrison, Jews, however, may not be used for that purpose.” [Researcher’s note: “Article letters,” from the 15th to the 18th century, were documents that spelled out the collective rights and obligations of soldiers.]
