Royal Decree [Magdeburg, Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel; Present-day Germany]: “[…] whether the poor Jews and Christians should be exempt from the debt tax, […] [We have decided] that this (the law) should be changed henceforth; [and that] only Jews, without exception, are to pay a debt tax and those who are not able to make the payment, the community shall be liable for them […].”
